All of the finalists were highlighted on the TODAY Show last week, encouraging the public to vote for their favorite organization on the TODAY Show website. Gateway Greening’s segment featured City Seeds Urban Farm, located in downtown St. Louis near Union Station. City Seeds Urban Farm is an urban agriculture partnership providing job training and therapeutic agriculture for St. Patrick Center’s homeless and poor clients, while increasing production and distribution of locally grown foods. The Gateway Greening program also trains St. Patrick Center’s homeless clients in green horticulture, preparing them for jobs in landscaping, nurseries, gardening retailers and other green-care jobs.
While Gateway Greening did not win the grand prize of $100,000, which went to a food bank serving the Gulf Coast region, it was one of the remaining three organizations that each won $50,000 from Pepsi.
On September 8, the TODAY Show returned to the City Seeds Urban Farm to hear what would be done with the $50,000. There, Gateway Greening announced that they plan to build a Hoop House, allowing food to be grown throughout the year, creating more job training opportunities for St. Patrick Center clients!
