“If it wasn’t for St. Patrick Center, I would not be the woman I am today.”
Denisha has been on her own since she was 13. She had her first apartment at 15, but was misguided and confused by a series of situations and people, and found herself homeless. “All I had was myself, my car and God,” she reflects.
A friend told Denisha about St. Patrick Center, so she enrolled in the Independent Living Skills program. “I was lost at the time, but John was a very good teacher and he taught us that we’re going to have ups and downs in life, and we have to keep pushing.”
After Living Skills graduation, Denisha got a job as a waitress and started school to study criminal justice. She also got an apartment, which she says is a relief. “It was sad living in my car, crying every night, trying to figure out what to do, and now I have a home to come to, a comfortable bed to lay in.”
Denisha says her life is going great so far. “When I was homeless, I always heard that voice in my heard that said ‘you’re gonna make it, Denisha, you’re gonna be OK’.” Now, she says, she feels motivated, determined and on her way to success!
