On September 22, 2011, St. Patrick Center was mentioned in a St. Louis Post-Dispatch cover story entitled, “Poverty extends reach across St. Louis Region,” by Doug Moore.
New U.S. Census data reports that an additional 19,000 people living in the region’s top six counties plus St. Louis city fell into poverty in 2010. The Post-Dispatch article states that it is clear that the lasting effects of long-term high unemployment is forcing people who do not typically ask for assistance to do so.
In the article, St. Patrick Center states that it has not seen an increase in clients coming in to receive services. But if things don’t get better soon, we could eventually see people who have “run out of resources and end up at St. Patrick Center.”
