Our program for youth is called the Fred Saigh K.I.C.K. program at St. Patrick Center. K.I.C.K. stands for Kids Interested in Caring about Kids. The mission of the Fred Saigh K.I.C.K. program is to increase awareness and understanding of homelessness in our community by educating high school students; to provide programs that develop leadership and commitment to community service among students; and to establish fundraising partnerships between St. Patrick Center and students/schools.
Here is a look at our three Fred Saigh K.I.C.K. programs that youths can get involved in:
Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway August 9, 2008 The Fred Saigh K.I.C.K. program committee solicits individual, family and parish assistance for this August program to distribute more than 2000 backpacks full of school supplies to local children in need. The committee also hosts a fun and games carnival to distribute the backpacks to St. Patrick Center clients and their school children.
Leadership Training Day November 2008 TBA St. Patrick Center hosts Leadership Training Day each fall to educate select local high school students about homelessness, St. Patrick Center programs and leadership skills. The students are challenged to be leaders in their community and educate fellow students about homelessness. :: view the Leadership Training Day registration form
8th Grade Essay Contest November 2008 TBA These “Essays to End Homelessness” challenge local 8th parochial graders to reflect upon what it is like to be homeless, and to suggest actions that they can take to help make a permanent, positive change in a homeless or near-homeless person’s life. Students submit essays in November and winners are notified in January. St. Patrick Center CEO Dan Buck awards the grand prize winner at an all-school event at his/her school.
The more you know about homelessness, the easier it is to help KICK it!
