We have good news to share about Derek!

“I can’t imagine putting drugs into my body again… now I don’t even put in fast food!”

As a youth, one of seven children in his family, Derek was tempted by drugs. He eventually became a drug dealer and went to prison for eight years for possession of a controlled substance. While in jail, Derek lost both of his parents, so he knew he would have to assume a leadership role in his family when he got out. He used his prison time to improve his skills and complete apprenticeship programs in HVAC, forklift operation and boiler maintenance.

When he was released, Derek came to St. Patrick Center and enrolled in Project REACH. Incredibly, he found a job in two days making $12 an hour at a local manufacturing company! He has since maintained stable employment and housing, and would like to own his own business in the future.

Derek feels great responsibility for his family, so he helps several sisters who are single mothers with their children, his nieces and nephews. Another big priority is his health and sobriety. Through a partnership between Project REACH and the YMCA, he received a scholarship to a health center and continues to keep his body in good physical shape.

Using the same skills he used as a drug dealer – organization, community involvement and people skills – Derek plans this time around to have a positive influence on his family, community and environment.

Thanks to Project REACH for contributing to this story!
